PUBLIC GRAND OPENING and CAREER SUMMIT FOR VETERANS –\u00a0Tuesday, April 15, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ribbon cutting with Mayor Ron Corbett and U.S. Army General Tommy Franks (Retired) at 1:30 pm<\/p>\n

Mays Island, Veterans Memorial Building, 50 2nd Avenue Bridge<\/p>\n

\u201cOur finest tribute to their valor will be the quality of our own lives,\u201d said Dr. McCabe, then\u00a0President of Coe College, at the dedication in 1960 of a replica of the \u201cFlag Raising on Iwo Jima\u201dbronze memorial mounted at the entrance to the Veterans Memorial Building in downtown\u00a0Cedar Rapids on Mays Island.\u00a0Now it is time to re-dedicate the Veterans Memorial Building after its full restoration from the\u00a0flood of 2008.\u00a0The official re-opening, ribbon cutting, and inaugural event will be held on April 15, 2014. The\u00a0Veterans Memorial Building will host the second annual \u201cHOOAH! Career Summit for Service\u00a0Members and Veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n

This event brings together industry, education, and military resources under one roof. This all\u00a0day event was created to assist veterans and service members in translating and converting\u00a0hard won military training and experience into a rewarding civilian career. Sponsored by\u00a0William Penn University, the April 15th\u00a0represented: Rockwell Collins, Alliant Energy, Principal Financial Group, Home Depot,\u00a0Transamerica, and UnityPoint.<\/p>\n

Due to the generosity of William Penn University, keynoting the event and assisting with the\u00a0ribbon cutting, alongside Mayor Ron Corbett, will be General Tommy Franks (retired). The\u00a0public ribbon cutting will be held at 1:30 p.m. on April 15th\u00a0\u201cWe owe you,\u201d Franks says. \u201cWe owe them: the best training; the best benefits; the best\u00a0equipment; the best love of service and self\u2014and the best security this country can provide.\u00a0And it doesn\u2019t come without a cost. We\u2019re here to bear that cost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Echoing this sentiment is Veteran Memorial Commission Executive Director, Mike Jager. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0been a long trip,\u201d says Jager. \u201cWith us being at the epicenter of the flood in June of 2008, it\u00a0took us over a year to get temporary electricity, a full three and a half years for the federal\u00a0government (FEMA) to release the project and allow us to proceed with construction (late\u00a0November 2011). Then another two full years-plus with local contractors performing the actual\u00a0work, I would not want to have to relive it all over again, but I think it\u2019s worth the outcome. I\u00a0know it is from the Veterans I have spoken with who are both pleased and proud to have this\u00a0place in full service again.\u201d<\/p>\n
